Built in 1935, Almaty Airport now has plans for expansion, which includes a new passenger terminal for international flights to accommodate up to 2,500 passengers per hour. The airport already handles a high volume of passengers, such as the 4,003,004 who passed through its doors in 2012 alone. Although now boasting duty free shopping, business terminals and a gallery, the planned expansion will ensure a more developed infrastructure that includes a new shopping complex, Marriot hotel and a cinema.
